The Iwo Jima U.S. Commemorative Stamp
1945

U.S. Marines raise the flag atop Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima. The "Leathernecks" lost 5,800 men on the Island. Ira Hayes, a Pima American Indian and U.S. Marine, is the last one on the left who had just released his hands off the U.S. Flag pole. This moment was caught on camera by Joe Rosenthal, an Associated Press Photographer. Joe Rosenthal's picture inspired the U.S. Marine Corps Memorial in Washington, D.C.
