It depicts Ira Hayes, a Pima Indian, who helped raised the U.S. Flag on Mount Suribachi, Iwo Jima, Japan, in 1945. The painting, last heard of, is at the Marine Corps Museum at Quantico, Virginia. Ira Hayes, after World War II, returned to his people in Arizona. He had a difficult time of surviving in the capitalist environment that surrounded his homeland and therefore, could not hold a job. He was later found dead in a pool of his vomit. He died from alcoholism and a broken spirit.
