The Diné numbering system is a base ten numerical system starting from 0 to 999,999,999. The Navajo word for "zero" was adopted from the Navajo word for "nothing" (ádin) during the time when the Conquistadors and Friars arrived on Navajoland in the year 1540. There is no single word in Navajo for "billion", "trillion", and other larger numbers. Numbers from a billion and upward can be created using existing Navajos words for a thousand, hundred thousand, etc., in combination with the Navajo word for a "million" (mííltsoh). Navajo speakers will usually say very large numbers in English because it is easier to say and think of how to say them. There are specific rules in forming the numbers that becomes a pattern for most of the numbers. Most of the rules for the numbers will be explained below. The numbers in multiples of 10 from 20 to 100 (20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, and 100), are formed by adding a multiplicative "times 10" Navajo suffix "diin" to the base numbers 2 - 10.
