El Capitan, also known as Agathla Peak, and shown as Lana Negra on McComb’s map of 1860, is a sheer volcanic pinnacle, 1,500 feet in height, and an elevation of 6,098 feet, springing from a rolling country side 8 miles north of the town of Kayenta. El Capitan is a landmark commanding a view of the entire Kayenta - Monument Valley region. El Capitan is of ceremonial importance to the Navajos.
‘Aghaa’lá is placed by the Bead Chant stories of clan wanderings as the place where the Tóbaazhní’ Aázhnii (Two Came For Water Clan), joined the Western Water Clans on their eastward trek. Some sources state that the name, Much Wool, refers to the custom of scraping deer hides on the coarse basalt that eventually piled up the hair or "wool" along the sides.
